recensie naar aanleiding van de solo tentoonstelling ‘Horizon’ in de [st]ArtCube, Temse (5 juni - 4 juli 2008)
De huidige [st]ArtCube-expo ‘Horizon’ bundelt een selectie recent werk van kunstenaar Brantt.
Brantt, afgestudeerd in 2003, kenmerkt zich als een kunstenaar in volle ontwikkeling.
In deze serie worden impasto olieverfdoeken als het ware gemodelleerd met het paletmes.
Het werkproces is geen vooraf zorgvuldig uitgestippeld concept, maar een voortdurende wisselwerking tussen kunstenaar en kunstwerk. Een intuïtief groeiproces dat zich 'en route' ontwikkelt en pas zijn uiteindelijke voltooiing krijgt in de waarneming van de toeschouwer.
Door het opeenstapelen en weer wegschrapen van zuivere kleurvlakken en materie ontstaat er een soort spel van afstoten en aantrekken, van structuur versus vrijheid. Contrasterende kleuren of reliëfpartijen verdelen het werk in een boven- en onderkant. Een horizon tekent zich af. Het uiteindelijke resultaat is een uitgepuurd landschap – ontdaan van elke trivialiteit – herleid tot zijn pure vorm.
Niettegenstaande het werk de natuur oproept, weigert de kunstenaar resoluut elke ‘figuratie’ in zijn doeken. Het doek staat op zichzelf – met kleur en materie als belangrijkste hoofdrolspelers in het overbrengen van emoties.

L’expo [st]ArtCube actuelle “Horizon” regroupe une sélection d’oeuvres récentes de l’artiste Brantt.
Brantt, qui a terminé ses études en 2003, peut être décrit comme un artiste en pleine évolution.
Dans cette série, des peintures à l’huile impasto sont pour ainsi dire modelées à l’aide du couteau à palette.
Le processus de travail n’est pas un concept soigneusement défini à l’avance, mais un échange constant entre l’artiste et l’oeuvre d’art. Un processus de croissance intuitif qui se développe “en route” et n’atteint son accomplissement ultime que dans l’observation du spectateur.
En superposant et en grattant à nouveau les couleurs en aplat pures et la matière, une espèce de jeu de repousser et d’attirer se crée, de structure versus liberté. Des couleurs contrastantes ou des parties en relief divisent l’oeuvre en une face supérieure et inférieure. Un horizon se dessine. Le résultat final est un paysage épuré – débarrassé de toute trivialité – réduit à sa forme pure.
Malgré que l’œuvre évoque la nature, l’artiste refuse résolument chaque “figuration” dans ses toiles. La toile est indépendante – avec les couleurs et la matière comme principaux acteurs du transfert d’émotions.

The current [st]ArtCube-expo ‘Horizon’ brings together a selection of recent work by artist Brantt.
Brantt, who graduated in 2003, characterizes himself as an artist in full development.
In this series impasto oil-paint canvases appear to be modeled with a palette knife.
The work process has not been carefully outlined in advance as a concept, but instead is a continuing interaction between artist and art work. An intuitive growing process develops itself ‘on route’ to eventual completion, which only happens through the perception of the witness.
The layering on and then scraping away of pure colour areas and matter creates a type of game of repulsion and attraction, of structure versus freedom. Contrasting colours or relief areas divides the work into an upper and a lower part. A horizon outlines itself. The eventual result is a reduced landscape - stripped of every commonplace - to its pure form.
In spite of the fact that the work beckons nature, the artist resolutely rejects any figure on his canvas. The canvas stands on its own - leaving colour and matter to act as the leading players in transmitting emotions.
